As the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, the Pentagon is the hub of our nation's military operations, hosting more than 23,000 military and civilian employees - all contributing to the planning and execution of the country's defense. Opened in 1943, the 5-story building earned its name from the unique pentagon shape designed by American architect, George Bergstrom, and, today, more than 100,000 visitors tour the facility each year. Some of the highlights of the Pentagon building include its Hall of Heroes, a room dedicated to the honor of 3,460 Medal of Honor recipients, and the 9/11 Memorial & Chapel, a quiet space dedicated to honoring the fallen heroes of the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.
Guided tours are free.
Tours are offered from 9am-3pm, Monday-Friday.
